Iris Rescue – Laplace
January 5 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Louisiana Iris Conservation Initiative (LICI) will be holding an iris rescue on property that is zoned for commercial development, is permitted, and is for sale in the Laplace, La. area. The site is in an area where the grass has been bush-hogged about 100′ from a gravel parking lot. We have rescued irises here in the past. We have permission from the landowner and the leaseholder to remove the irises.
The I. giganticaerulea species of the Louisiana iris that will be rescued from this site will be planted at a later date at the Nicholls State University Experimental Farm in Thibodaux, La. or at another marsh restoration project in St. Bernard parish.
We will be working in grass about 6″ – 8″ tall in a site that will likely be muddy from recent rains. Long pants and regular rubber rain boots are recommended for this event.
A canopy and lawn chairs will be set up for breaks nearby. Snacks and bottled water will be available.
Bathrooms are available at nearby fast food outlets.
Some long-handled shovels will be supplied, but feel free to bring your favorite from home. We will have some work gloves available.
Some of the volunteers will be needed to clean weeds from the irises at the base station while others will dig irises out in the field.
LICI’s usual liability release will need to be signed by all volunteers.
RSVP or if you have any questions: licisaveirises@gmail.com
We will email the directions to the location back to you. The site is a 30 – 40 minute drive west of New Orleans.
Any help that you can give will be greatly appreciated.
