SUMMARY:Planting Louisiana Irises at Pelican Park - Mandeville
DESCRIPTION:The Louisiana Iris Conservation Initiative (LICI) will be holding its fourth annual iris planting volunteer event at Pelican Park Recreation District #1 in St. Tammany parish\, near Mandeville\, La on Saturday\, November 23\, 2024. We’ll work from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM or until all of the irises are planted\, whichever comes first.\nThis volunteer event is open to the public to participate.\n\nPlease bring your own long handled shovel. The site will likely be muddy\, so either wear regular rain boots or old shoes. Bottled water will be supplied. There are park bathrooms nearby to the planting site.\nThe irises will be planted in a rainwater detention area next to the “Gold Complex” parking lot. Stay to the right at the first intersection on the entrance road as you drive past the Castine Center. The “Gold Complex” road is located on the left side of the entrance road about half-way back to the rear of the park. (There is a sign.)\nIts important that everyone that would like to participate send us an email at licisaveirises@gmail.com so that we know how many irises to bring. We’d like to try and plant as many as 400 irises if enough volunteers are coming.\nEach volunteer will be asked to sign a liability waiver at the start of the event.\nAll help will be greatly appreciated!

SUMMARY:Longleaf Pine Savanna Walk - Nature Conservancy Location TBD
DESCRIPTION:Free event\, though registration is required and limited to 20 participants. \nGet outdoors and take a walk on the wild side into one of the Northshore’s premier natural habitats:  Longleaf Pine Flatwood Savanna.See numerous carnivorous plants in their fall color.  Learn about native habitats\, flora\, wildlife\, natural history and restoration management fromconservation biologist Nelwyn McInnis of Southern Wild LLC who has been working in this habitat type for over 30 years. \nLongleaf Pine Savannas are floristically rich\, herb-dominated wetlands that are naturally sparsely stocked with Pinus palustris (longleaf pine). They historically dominated the Gulf Coastal Plain flatwood regions from Florida to Texas\, including much of southeast and southwest Louisiana. The term “savanna” is classically used to describe expansive herb-dominated areas with scattered trees.  Register at \nhttps://wildonespontchartrainbasin@gmail.com/
