About the LNPS


The Louisiana Native Plant Society was founded in 1983 as a state-wide, non-profit organization. Its purposes are:

  • To preserve and study native plants and their habitats.
  • To educate people on the value of native plants and the need to preserve and protect rare and endangered species.
  • To promote the propagation and use of native plants in the landscape.
  • To educate people on the relationship between our native flora and wildlife.

LNPS Grants


2008 grant applications are now available to organizations and full-time graduate students. Applications must be completed and received no later than June 1, 2008 to be considered for funding. LNPS anticipates awarding two grants of $500 each. One grant will be awarded to an organization and one grant will be awarded to a graduate student. Recipients will be selected and announced August 1, 2008.

June 20, 2009

Edible Plant Talk/Tour/Teas at Allen Acres, Saturday June 20 at 8 am. This is your chance to walk around with the author of "Edible Plants of the Gulf South" (Dr. Charles M. Allen) and see and learn edible plants firsthand. Tables full of plants will also be spread out for you to look at, learn about, taste test, etc. There will also be tea tasting with at least 10 different homemade wild collected plant teas for you to sip including blackberry tip, New Jersey, red clover, and yaupon. June 23-26, 2009

Native Plant Identification workshop. The Louisiana State University Herbarium is offering a native, vascular plant identification workshop on June 23-26, 2009. It will consist of an intensive, hands-on approach with two days of classroom work and two days of field study. Deadline for registration is June 15. >> details (PDF)

August 1, 2009

Woody Plant Walk and Identification Workshop. This is your chance to walk around with the author of Trees, shrubs, and Woody Vines of Louisiana (Dr. Charles M. Allen) and see and learn woody plants firsthand. Poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac will be seen plus many other trees, shrubs, and woody vines. Tables full of labeled plants will also be spread out for you to look at, photograph, learn the best recognizing features, crush and smell, test your id skills, etc. There will also be plant samples that you may take with you. You will be exposed to more than 100 species of woody plants. All are welcome including children. Pre-registration requested. >> MORE INFO
