Louisiana Certified Habitat Program

The Louisiana Certified Habitat program recognizes the efforts of Louisiana residents, schools and organizations to conserve our natural heritage.  The goal of this program is to encourage property owners and managers to increase and protect the ecological value of their land to benefit wildlife and natural systems.

Habitat certification levels are determined by the number of native plant species or percentage of native plant species on a property: bronze level is 25 native species or 25% native plants, silver is 50 native species or 50% native plants, and gold is 75% native species or 75% native plants. Certification includes a nine inch by 12 inch metal yard sign citing the habitat level.  Usually someone will visit and walk through the property with you, often helping ID additional natives.  Certification levels can be upgraded for free at any time - just re-submit an updated species list via email.

Because Louisiana Certified Habitats serve as models for the community, properties must be in compliance with local ordinances regarding vegetative growth and maintenance of landscape to be certified.

This program is being underwritten by the Louisiana Native Plant Society and administered by LNPS and their conservation partners including the Native Plant Initiative of Greater New Orleans, the Acadiana Native Plant Project, the LSU Hilltop Arboretum and other important advocates around the state.

Over 200 properties have been posted to our MAP so far!
