Common Serviceberry Amelanchier arborea is a deciduous shrub or small (12’ X 6’) tree that occurs naturally in rich woodlands along streams and on open wooded slopes of north Louisiana and the Florida parishes. It blooms profusely March – May with fragrant, white to pink flowers. This species also has striking fall foliage color.
For landscaping purposes, this species will thrive in part-shade or filtered light where the soils are neither too wet nor too dry. Its flowers are important for butterflies and other pollinators; its fruits are an important source of food for birds and small mammals.
