Native Plant Propagation: Theory & Practice

Join horticulture professional Emily Driskill to learn about propagation methods for native plant species. Emily is the founder and head grower at Tanager Plants LLC, a native plant nursery in North Carolina, co-owns and designs for Blackbird Landscapes LLC in Mars Hill, NC. She has extensive professional propagation experience, and is the former nursery manager at Carolina Native Nursery. Cost is $30 for non-members and $25 for members. Registration is required see below.  The workshop will cover:

  • Seed and vegetative methods, and how to decide which approach to take.
  • Seed discussion will cover sustainable collecting practices, protocols for conserving genetic biodiversity, cleaning, stratification, and sowing.
  • Vegetative methods will cover stem cuttings, layering, root cuttings, live stakes, and division.
  • There will be demonstrations of most vegetative methods, and everyone will have a chance to make a woody stem cutting to take home.
  • Ways to adapt methods to various production scales will be discussed.
  • You will leave with several stem cuttings, a list of supplies needed to start your own project, and a trusty compilation of references.
  • Some pruners will be available but please bring clean/sharp pruners/scissors if you have them!

Emilyis an alumna of The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, earning a B.A./B.S. with concentrations in Botany and Sustainable Agriculture. Through her many seasons of botany fieldwork in the Pacific northwest, the western Rockies, the southern Appalachians, and the mid-Atlantic coastal plain, she has gained a loving familiarity with native plants and their roles in the ecosystem.
